Why do so many players place so much value on small pocket pairs? So many times I have seen people call pot sized bets all the way to the river with a pair of sixes, for instance, when there are 3 or 4 overcards on the board.

Three words.
'Hope springs eternal'
They convince themselves that their set will be good if it hits, and look for reasons to justify calling.

Funny, that's precisely why I will play a small pocket pair to a pre-flop raise.
Maybe I'm just lucky but I find that my set is frequently 'good'.
Continuing on in the hand, calling bets when you don't flop a set is a different matter however.
